Overview
The Space Saver Series from NordicTrack features easy to use, easy to store ellipticals with a rear drive design, closer to a walking/jogging motion that similar front drive trainers. The SE7i is the base model, but is packed with a nice array of features and capabilities, making it a good entry level option. The recent redesign brings some nice advanced features as well.
Let’s take a look at the best features:
iFit Coach Technology
The new SpaceSaver SE7i is equipped with the latest version of the company’s popular iFit Coach technology, which you can access via Bluetooth using your tablet or smart phone. It gives you access to a host of specialized workout programs, exercise recommendations, diet plans and Google maps to choose any destination in the world to train in. It does require a small monthly fee, but it is well worth it for all of the fitness tools it gives you.
Built in Workout Apps
On top of the workouts you can access through iFit Coach, there are a whopping 24 trainer-designed programs to choose from, including 12 calorie based and 12 performance based workouts. This gives you a lot of different options to choose from, which will help you reach your fitness goals faster.
Power Incline
The new SE7i offers up to 8 degrees of power incline, up from 7 degrees on the previous model, which gives you a nice way to ramp up training and work different muscle groups in the legs. Add to that 22 levels of resistance and you can really push yourself hard if you want to.
Other Nice Features
The SpaceSaver SE7i also features an integrated tablet holder, SMR resistance, transport wheels, oversized pedals, a 5″ backlit display and AutoBreeze workout fan.
NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE7i Test Drive
As the name suggests, the SE7i does feature convenient Space Saver design. You can fold it and store it very easily after your workout, and easily unfold it when you are ready to get started again. The machine is smooth and quiet, and the rear drive mechanism puts you in a more straight up position than a front drive, although to us it really doesn’t make much of a difference.
The iFit Coach technology is a great touch. The company currently gives you a free wearable device when you sign up for iFit, and you can track all of your daily activity with it. iFit gives you unlimited personal-trainer designed programs, meal plans, sleep tips, workout goals and more, plus as we mentioned Google maps so you can pick a remote island somewhere or just a road near you and train there virtually. It’s worth the monthly free just for this option.
Even if you don’t go with iFit, there are 24 different workouts to choose from, plus 8 degrees of incline and 22 resistance levels. With all of that you can literally do a different workout every day, or switch up your intensity within a single workout. You can change everything with the touch of a button. The 5″ display is a little clearer than on previous models, and gives you all of the relevant workout metrics including distance, time, calories, speed, resistance, incline level and RPMs.
Any drawbacks? Probably just the stride length. The one drawback on the SpaceSaver models, including the up-level SE9i model, is the 18″ stride length, which is OK for those of regular height, but taller users might find it a bit tight.
So if you are 6 feet or taller, definitely take a look at one of the other NordicTrack elliptical trainers, where you’ll find strides of 20″ or more.
Conclusion
For under $1000, you’ll be hard pressed to find an elliptical trainer with more features than the SpaceSaver SE7i. You get a large number of workouts, extensive resistance levels, incline capability, space saving design and everything iFit Coach has to offer.
As we mentioned, if you are on the taller side this might be a tight fit for you. If that is the case take a look at comparable front drive models. Also, if you want a touch screen with internet, check out the up-level SE9i model, which also has 10 degrees of incline, wireless chest strap for more accurate heart rate monitoring, more resistance levels and more workouts.
