Overview: The Precor AMT 733 Adaptive Motion Trainer replaces the 811 as the entry level model in the series, a hybrid elliptical with strides up to 36″ for a fuller range of motion and enhanced muscle group targeting. At over $8,000, it’s definitely expensive, but the quality and design are unrivaled and if you have the budget, this one is a real winner.
Let’s take a look at some of the best features you will find on the elliptical…
Impressive Stride Length
Definitely the most appealing feature of the Adaptive Motion Trainers is the freedom that the adjustable stride length affords. You can change the length on the fly, and go from a short stepper like motion all the way up to a free run that mimics a treadmill workout.
This allows you to target different muscle groups, and there is even a special Stride Dial that shows you exactly what muscle groups you are targeting. This is a very cool feature that lets you really hone in on problem areas. Along with the dual arms, you can really get a full body workout.
Excellent Biomechanics
Precor is one of the originators in this industry, and what sets them apart is the research that supports all of their design decisions. The AMT 733 is no different, and the biomechanics are validated by Western Washington University, ensuring that the motion is ideal for all size users. So whether you are short and light or tall and heavy, the machine will feel smooth and natural throughout your workout.
Heart Rate Monitoring
The AMT 733 is equipped with grip and wireless heart rate monitoring capability, so you can choose which one appeals most to you. Wireless will be more accurate, and is especially useful for the built-in heart rate workout program.
Other Nice Features
You also get foot pedals with toe caps, a step on platform in the rear for easy access, water bottle and accessories holder, transport wheels, 20 resistance levels, 5 workout programs and a large LED display with 21 workout metrics.
Precor AMT 733 Test Drive
We couldn’t get one of these in-house in time for our Precor AMT 733 review, so we made the trip to our local fitness equipment store to give it a whirl. After so many years of doing this, we are no longer ashamed to try out every feature an elliptical has…we have even gone back to the store multiple times to try out the same machine. 🙂
OK back to the 733. It is very similar to the previous entry level model that we mentioned above, the 811. That one is no longer available. Getting on the machine is very easy with the platform, which is a nice touch that you don’t find on most elliptical trainers. That extra few inches above the floor is quite helpful.
The motion is smooth and natural as promised, and you can easily change your stride without even having to push a button. The Adaptive Motion Trainer responds to your motion, so all you have to do is shorten or lengthen your stride and it moves with you.
We really liked the Stride Dial feature too…of course you can feel what muscles you are targeting…but to be able to see it in front of you is really cool. This way you can know exactly what you are hitting, and if you have an area that you want to work on, you can keep the ideal stride length throughout your workout.
Speaking of workouts, there aren’t many to choose from, but the 5 built in are ample enough to change up your routine. The LED interface is bright and large, and it gives you everything you need to know and more, including speed, distance, time, heart rate, calories, average speed, stride length, Watts, METs and more.
Heart rate monitoring is very accurate, especially with the wireless chest strap. It’s not included, so you’ll need to buy one separately. It would have been nice to see one included for the price.
While we’re talking about things that would be nice, a touch screen would also enhance the experience. You have to bump to the top of the line AMT 885 for that though, for a mere $12000.
All in all, the Precor AMT 733 gave us a great workout. We love the open stride, and the fact that you can use it as a stepper, an elliptical or a treadmill essentially, without having to push a button. It’s a solid machine, and as smooth and quiet as you can imagine. When we win the lottery, we will be buying an Adaptive Motion Trainer.
Final Thoughts
The AMT 733 is as close as you can get to a commercial elliptical as possible, and if you can afford the $8000+ price tag, you’ll be very happy with this machine for years to come.
Also consider the 835 and 885, as these models have Open Stride technology that allows you to not only adjust the length of the stride, but also the height, further enhancing your workouts.
