Schwinn 420 EllipticalSchwinn 420 Elliptical

Web Price: $799 | Sale Price: $599

This is a fairly new model, but with the horrible console you wouldn’t know it. The display is impossible to read, and the fan is totally worthless, but if you don’t care at all about those things then perhaps it will be worth the cheap price.

**UPDATE** As of 2016, the Schwinn 420 elliptical is no longer being produced. It has been replaced by the new 430 model. Thankfully the price is still the same, as is the maximum weight capacity. The good news is they upped the stride to 20 inches from 18 which is a huge bonus, especially for taller users.

Expert Reviews

“One drawback for this model is that its stride length is a fixed 18 inches. That is a typical stride length for many elliptical machines, and many people find it to be smooth and comfortable. However, if you are tall or have a generally long stride, the 18-inch oval leg motion that this machine offers might feel a bit constricted and choppy. In addition, you cannot adjust the incline on this machine.” – Top Ten Reviews

“The Schwinn 420 is a good-quality discount elliptical trainer. Unlike some other inexpensive ellipticals, it’s built to withstand years of regular use. It has a full stride, cushioned footplates, and a convenient iPod holder. The main drawback to this model is its short warranty.” – Elliptical Reviews Net

“Nautilus, the parent of Schwinn Fitness, has beat all odds and predictions and managed to survive the economic downturn. They are making a solid unit at $599.” – Treadmill Doctor

User Reviews

Overall, users of the Schwinn 420 Elliptical seem to appreciate the machine, however, it’s unanimous that the console is totally worthless. The following reviews come straight from the Schwinn 420 product page and every single one of the reviews on the site gives mention to the horrible console – either how bad the display is, the worthlessness of the fan, or both.

“The fan is useless unless you lean way over and put your face right up against it. The screen has to be used in lighted area or you can’t see it. I use it early in the morning so I have to have a flashlight to see the screen to avoid waking everyone up. Other than those two things I love it.” -Recovering Athlete from Arizona

“The 420, so far is sturdy… The console on the other hand…shame on you Schwinn. The fan is a joke and the readouts are very hard to see. I think based on all I have read on console (after online purchase) Schwinn should do something to make this right. I have to hold a small flashlight when I want to read it” -Hawk from Arizona

“We wish the display was readable and larger. As others have said, the font is pencil thin, and there is very poor contrast, so unless you hold a flashlight up to the display, you really can’t see it. Also, you can only store one user’s profile (age, weight, sex, etc.). In this day of modern electronics and displays, there is no reason why Schwinn couldn’t have put more thought into the console and display to make it really usable” -Jeff from Kingston, GA

Video Review

Here is a Youtube video put out by Schwinn for those of you who would like to see the 420 in action. Just keep in mind that since the video was created by Schwinn, they would never point out any drawbacks with the machine.

The Schwinn 420 Elliptical is a cheap machine, but most users are very unhappy to find that though the machine usually works well, the display is a piece of garbage. If you can honestly say that you don’t care at all about the console, then perhaps this is something to consider. But keep in mind that if you would like to be able to keep track of your time, mileage, calories burned, or anything else that any modern piece of exercise equipment can easily tell you, then stay far, far away from this model.

Also remember that the stride length is fixed at 18” so if you are tall, then will want to get a different machine.
