I’m just going to tell you right now – do not buy this machine. Yes the price is low, but too often there are problems with machines making loud noises, manufacturer defects, and horrible customer service.

Expert Reviews

“There are so many better ellipticals on the market in this price range it is impossible to count them. Schwinn, under the ownership of the Nautilus Group, has become a sad, sad joke. If it wasn’t so sad it would almost be funny to see such a proud brand name fall so far. Needless to say we would look for something better to buy.” – Treadmill Doctor

“At first glance, the Schwinn 431 elliptical is a much more solid and substantial unit than the Schwinn 430, which makes sense because of the $200 more it costs. The frame tubing is thicker and heavier on the Schwinn 431, giving it a much more stable feel during workouts, allowing use by much heavier users.” – Treadmill Sensei

“…Most users agree- the fan is pretty much useless. There have been some reports of squeaks and wobbles here and there, but they all appear to be a result of faulty construction on the owner’s part. The 18″ stride on the Schwinn 431 elliptical may not be sufficient for taller users (over 5’8″), or those who are used to a 20″ stride from fitness center models.” – Elliptical-Trainers

User Reviews

The most helpful reviews of the Schwinn 431 come from Amazon. Here are a few of those.

“(After 4 months of use) Some of the bolts have snapped off the foot pedals. This machine is used 3 to 5 days a week, for forty minutes maximum at a time. It is not used at top speed. I am 114 pounds, so my weight should not have an adverse effect on this machine. Extremely disappointed that it has not even lasted 6 months.” – J. L. from Missouri

“After approximately 5 months of irregular use by only one person, the Schwinn 431 elliptical has developed a terrible squeak in the flywheel, and the brake system is failing to increase the resistance levels properly.” – Cecil Davis, Amazon User

“This was the machine that had the best reviews for what I was able to afford. It was pretty easy to put together. The fan doesn’t work after assembly. I also can’t get the heart rate monitor to function either. Will be calling to see how to fix. I’m only 5’3″ and the stride on this machine feels really short.” – C. Goranson, Amazon user

The Schwinn 431 Elliptical may be a good purchase for some, but one of the main problems is the fixed stride length at 18”. This is a shorter length than most machines have, so if you are a taller person, you can expect an uncomfortable workout! Also be aware that there is always the risk that you will get a faulty machine, and Schwinn (like many exercise equipment companies) is not an ideal company to work with when it comes to customer service.
