Overview: The Matrix A30 Ascent Trainer is a total body elliptical machine designed for residential use. One of the newest models from Johnson Fitness, the A30 comes with a heavy flywheel, adjustable incline ramp, variable stride, and multiple levels of resistance to help you enjoy gym-quality workouts in the privacy of your home.
Here are some of the key features of the machine…
Innovative Technology
The Suspension Elliptical Technology, which is a key feature of Matrix ellipticals, ensures there is no friction or noise and allows for a natural heel to toe motion without restricting your movement. The PerfectStride technology, on the other hand, ensures that there are no dead spots or surges that could interrupt your motion. These two technologies work in tandem to ensure the smoothest, most natural motion.
Interactive Workouts
The newly incorporated iFit technology (found on the touch screen consoles) brings the joy of outdoor running right to your home gym. You can choose any terrain across the world right on the console via Google maps, while the A30 adjusts the incline and resistance automatically to match the surface of the terrain.iFit is currently free for a month, giving you a host of on-demand and live workouts to choose from.
High Intensity Training Program
The revolutionary Sprint 8 program offers you a tailor-made workout to help you lose weight and develop lean muscle mass in just eight weeks. A Johnson Fitness exclusive, Sprint 8 gives you faster results than ordinary workout programs. You also get ten additional built-in workouts.
Multiple Console Options
The Matrix A30 Ascent Trainer offers you three consoles to choose from – XR, XER, and XIR. All three consoles have Sprint 8 and a number of built in workouts. The XER and XIR cost more than the XR console and come with a number of additional features like touchscreen display, iFit, Bluetooth connectivity, entertainment apps, speakers, and USB port.
Other Important Features
The A30 also features moving and stationary handlebars, oversized foot pedals, grip sensors, wireless heart rate receiver, accessory tray, and a water bottle holder.
Matrix A30 Ascent Trainer Test Drive
For an advanced elliptical trainer, the A30 is surprisingly easy to use. You can grab the handlebars, slip your feet into the cushioned pedals, choose a workout program from the console, and start working out right away. The resistance and incline controls are located conveniently in the handlebars, so you do not have to fumble with the buttons on the console every time you want to adjust the intensity of your workout.
Like the rest of the lineup, including its counterpart E30 model, the A30 is a suspension elliptical, which means the pedals do not run along a wheel track. It results in a noise-free, frictionless motion.
The machine also features the patented PerfectStride technology, which ensures a smooth, natural motion free of dead spots or surges. The stride length varies from 20″ to 24″ (as opposed to a fixed stride on the E30 and E50) and can accommodate users of any height.
There are 20 resistance levels (note the up-level A50 has 30 resistance levels) and the transition from one level to another is smooth thanks to the Eddy Current Brake system. The power incline can be adjusted from 24% all the way up to 54% with multiple incline settings. Incline training is not only a great way to burn more calories, but it also allows you to target different groups of muscles in your lower body.
The Sprint 8 program is one of the biggest selling points of Matrix ellipticals and it is easy to see why. All you have to do is enter your age and weight and select your intensity level to get started with your own high intensity interval training program.
All three consoles – XR, XER, and XIR – display a wide range of workout data and come with built-in workout programs, ViaFit workout tracking facility, Sprint 8 program, and Passport. The XER and XIR will give you internet capability and app integration, so if that’s something that is important to you opt for one of the advanced consoles if budget allows.
The Matrix A30 has grip sensors in the handlebars to track your heart rate. It also has a wireless heart rate receiver, but the chest strap is included only with the XER and XIR consoles, not the basic one. It is slightly disappointing, as we feel that the strap should have been included with the basic package, given the machine’s price tag.
What’s the bottom line?
The Matrix A30 Ascent Trainer is a top-notch elliptical machine, and early user reviews are quite positive. It combines innovative technology with user-friendly design to help you enjoy gym-quality workouts right from your living room. It is sturdily built and very durable and will last you a lifetime if maintained properly.
The price tag might put it out of the reach of people who are on a budget, but with Johnson Fitness machines, you always get your money’s worth. So, the A30 is definitely worth spending your money on.
