Overview: The Cybex 525AT is a commercial grade cardio machine giving you three machines in one to better target multiple muscle groups and provide a more effective, efficient workout. With 21 incline levels and a 24 inch stride, you can really take your workouts to the next level.

Let’s take a look at some of the best features…

Multiple Machines In One

The Arc Trainer is like three machines in one. In the lower position it is like a skier; in the medium position it is like the typical elliptical machine (with better biomechanics); at the upper position it is like a stair climber. So you get all of these different workout possibilities, targeting more muscle groups than a regular machine can.

Incline Capability

This is something you don’t find on all ellipticals, but incline capability is what really works the legs and gives you a more effective workout. The 525AT gives you 21 different incline levels to choose from. You can start low and then work your way up as you get more used to the machine.

Ideal Biomechanic Motion

Rather than the elliptical motion of the typical machine, the Cybex Arc Trainer 525AT is arc-shaped, which is purportedly more natural and biomechanically correct. Your toe is positioned behind your knee, causing less impact and stress on the joints and allowing for more freedom of motion. Also, the Same Side Forward technology ensures that your arm and leg move in tandem on each side, keeping your posture straight and eliminating fatigue.

Other Great Features

You get a 24 inch stride, which is ideal for any sized user, eddy current brakes, an 8″ x 5″ LED display with all of the important workout metrics, nine different workouts with 10 levels each, magazine rack, water bottle holder, contact and wireless heart rate monitoring and various color choices.

Cybex 525AT Test Drive

We have an Arc Trainer in our gym, and it’s a very cool machine. It’s one of the first hybrid ellipticals to offer that free floating on air feeling due to the fact that there is no track. It’s easy to get used to after a while, and it kind of spoils you, as it takes your workout to the next level. But there will always be a place for the traditional elliptical, in spite of how popular these new machines are becoming.

The 525AT is very smooth. Once you get a hang of the motion, you can transition between the different modes and incline levels, and you can really hit all of the different muscle groups. The arc motion allows you to engage more rear leg muscles than you can on a regular elliptical, which typically targets just the front ones. More muscles engaged means a more effective workout and more calories burned.

There is a nice array of workouts to choose from, and you can monitor your heart rate with the grip sensors or wirelessly, although you need to use your own monitor. As we mentioned, each workout has 10 different levels, and the machine automatically adjusts both the incline and the resistance to match the chosen workout.

The Arc Trainer is very similar to the Precor Adaptive Motion Trainers, although Cybex claims that the Arc Trainer gives you a more effective workout. It’s hard to know for sure.

Any negatives? Not really. These are pricey machines. The 525AT starts at around $5,600 and you can add the optional E3 cardio HDTV, which gives you a 15.6″ screen to watch videos while you work out. So it’s not cheap, but you are getting an incredible machine that you can’t really find from any other company. Also, it would be nice to get the wireless chest strap with the machine, but they are inexpensive enough so it’s not a deal breaker.

For those of you looking for something a little different, the Cybex 525AT Arc Trainer might be a good choice for you. They are a little more expensive than regular high-end elliptical machines, but they are giving you a more complete workout with better muscle targeting.

Take a look at the Precor AMTs as well, as they are similar in many ways but have some different features and capabilities.
