Overview: The Octane LateralX is one of the most unique elliptical machines we have ever come across, as it offers a workout like no other cardio trainer on the market today. On top of the typical forward and back motion you can also go up and down as well as side to side without having to touch a button. This means more leg muscles isolated and more calories burned.
Here are some of the machine’s best features…
Full Range Of Motion
As we mentioned above, the USP of the LateralX is the adjustable 3D motion it allows for. You can choose from 10 lateral width adjustments so you can make the path as narrow or wide as you’d like. You’re able to use leg muscles that you normally don’t, increasing the calorie burn with each move. This total freedom of movement takes some getting used it, but once you have the hang of it you’ll be off to the races.
Large Variety of Workouts
The LateralX has over a dozen built in workouts on the standard console, and even more on the touch console, including the newly designed 30:30 interval program for cardio endurance. You also get special workout boosters including X-Mode, Thigh Toner and Quad Power. There is definitely something for everybody, and you can change your routine from one workout to the next, helping you reach your fitness goals quicker.
Compact Design
The Octane LateralX is only 63″ long, about 10″+ shorter than a traditional elliptical machine, so it’s ideal for smaller spaces like most of us have in our home gyms.
Other Great Features
The base LateralX has a large LED screen, 30 resistance levels, wireless and digital heart rate monitoring, 3 speed fan and a personal viewing screen and wireless options. The up-level LateralX Smart adds a 10″ touch screen, additional workout boosters with Cross Circuit training, Wi-Fi, internet, apps and a browser.
Octane LateralX Test Drive
Our gym has a full row of LateralX trainers, right behind the new Zero Runners which have become quite popular. Both are some of the newer machines that Octane Fitness offers, and both offer very unique ranges of motion.
As we mentioned, the LateralX takes a little getting used to. We’ve all used steppers in the past and of course we are all very familiar with the elliptical motion, but the lateral portion is something totally different. It’s kind of like rollerblading or ice skating, except it’s a more defined motion.
After about 5 minutes or so, you can totally get the hang of it and you’ll be trying all sorts of variations. It all feels very smooth and natural, despite the unfamiliarity and the fact that you are incorporating muscles that you don’t usually use.
The gym has the LateralX Smart version with the touch screen and circuit training, so we were able to test out the videos and surf the web a bit. It all works very well and is very user friendly.
The workouts are great, and we especially like the workout boosters that help you fine tune your training. There are 30 resistance levels which is a lot more than you usually get.
The concept seems to be working…whenever we are at the gym most or all of the LateralX machines are in use. We asked a few of the gym goers what they liked most about the machines and they mentioned the increased calorie burn and muscle engagement and the two main draws…we certainly agree!
Final Thoughts
The LateralX is a fantastic new machine, although it is definitely on the pricey side. The base model, currently the LX8000, costs about $7,699 for the base model and $8,998 for the Smart model. That’s a lot of money to pay for a home elliptical machine.
Still, this is quite a workout and if you have the money for it you’ll get a cardio workout like no other machine can offer. More calories burned and more muscles engaged mean better results for you, and that’s what it is all about isn’t it?
