Expert Reviews

Although Xterra is not the most popular brand on the market, they are starting to make a name for themselves for their budget-priced ellipticals and treadmills that offer a lot of value. Critics like the fact that the machines are ergonomically designed to make workouts more natural and comfortable.

The pedals are oversized and cushioned, with a 2 degree inward tilt that puts you in a more natural position as you work out. You have multi-grip handlebars so you can choose the position that is most comfortable for you, or you can switch it up throughout your workout. The handlebars also have heart rate grips and controls to change the resistance.

You get a nice wide 7.5″ backlit display (one inch bigger than the 5.6e model) offering all of the important workout metrics such as distance, time, calories, pulse, resistance and incline level.

Experts also like the solid warranty on the 5.8e, which is lifetime on frame and brake, 7 years on parts and 1 year labor. This is a lot better than you find on most elliptical machines, especially under $1500.

User Reviews

User reviews have been very positive on the 5.8e. They note the variety of workouts as well as the incline and resistance levels allowing them to change their workout up from one session to the next. They like the audio jack and speaker system that allows them to listen to their music, as well as the oversized pedals and multigrip handles.

One of the newest features on the Xterra 5.8e that wasn’t on previous models is something called BitGym, an interactive exercise experience that features over 65 different locations across the world. Using your tablet or phone you can stream high-def video and choose from 100 different workouts synced to the speed of your workout. You can also track your entire workout using the camera on your tablet or phone.

So far this is a big hit, taking some of the monotony out of the workouts. One year of BitGym is currently included for free, after which there is a $7.99 monthly fee.

Here are some of the specific customer reviews from the Xterra website:

All of the user reviews are extremely positive. This machine receives a 4.8 star rating out of 5.0.

“Unbelievably quiet… unbelievable value $1,299… compare others with the same feature @ Sears or Dicks and you will order the 5.8e Xterra too. Icing on the cake is the 60 money back guarantee” -A’mir

“Great value on the 5.8 Xterra Elliptical we purchased a couple of weeks ago. Only bad thing is unit is large and heavy. It does have wheels in the front just in case you would like to move it. Overall it’s very quiet and features out the wazoo!” -Monica

“My whole family is using our 5.8 Xterra elliptical. Nice smooth and quiet piece of equipment that gives a fantastic workout. $1,299 on sale a nice feature as well.” -Jerry

“If you want a true dream of a cardio elliptical trainer, I would highly recommend the 5.8e Xterra for anyone who is looking for long lasting elliptical. Heavy flywheel, pulse grip, adjustable incline, fan, IPOD jack, customized programs, and I could go on and on…… Just Love it!!!!” -Constance

“I love it. The only thing I don’t like about the Xterra 5.8 is that you can’t adjust the pedals. One we used in the club had adjustable stride, but you can increase the incline…great tradeoff!” -Amy

“I didn’t think I’d find an affordable elliptical machine equal to the 5.8 e Xterra! they do in house financing too! Smooth and quiet we have ours right in front of the TV in the family room. It’s a great machine. I highly recommend it to all my friends and family.” -Reggie

Conclusion

The Xterra Free Style 5.8e is a great elliptical. It has a simple, but substantial workout display, comfortable pedals, and a heavy user weight capacity meaning it is a sturdy machine. There are a few features that may lack in comparison with competitor ellipticals, such as the non-adjustable stride length, but it’s not a deal breaker.

Most ellipticals give you at least 3 different lengths, while this one just comes with one. Most users did not complain about this feature, though, and they said it was large enough for comfort. Overall, this elliptical is pretty solid and if you want the highest end machine in the Xterra lineup, this is it. It does not get much better than this.
