Overview: The Islamadora features a number of upgrades from its sisters, the Captiva, Sanibel i35 and the Pompano, all of which are members in the same CardioCore family. Yowza Fitness’s flagship elliptical is offered at around $2399 when it’s on sale. With not that many differences between this and the Miami, you might want to spring for this model over its sister model because this one offers just as many features as the Miami, but at a lower cost.

Let’s get into it our review by highlighting the special features…

Swing Up Reactive Elliptical (S.U.R.E.) Technology

With increases in maximum stride length as well as an increase in incline, you can now get a better and more personalized workout. The variable stride length is now between 19″-30″, meaning there’s a comfortable motion for everyone in the family who uses it. I’m a little above average height and feel great using this. My colleagues, one of whom is on the shorter side, another quite tall at 6’3″ can both use the Islamorada comfortably.

SuperCore Handles

This is an update from the previous models. The patented motion design gives you longer moving handles and two egg-shaped rotating grips. This feature, also available on the Miami elliptical, better isolates your core muscles which include your back, abs, and obliques. This can definitely help you hit those problem areas a little better than you can with typical arms.

Adjustable Incline

With a range of 0-60% offered through this console’s electronic adjustable incline, the versatility of this machine almost pays for itself. The various incline options also allow you to target different parts of your lower body, while the handle bars give you an upper body workout. This gives a more comprehensive total body workout. When you ramp up the incline it becomes more of like a stair climber, which gives you a completely different workout than the elliptical motion.

Intelligent Weight Management (IWM) System

The Yowza Islamorada and Miami come with a set of scales that can be synced to the elliptical’s display console. It allows up to 9 user profiles to be stored, which increases the accuracy of the body-weight specific calories burned, as well as body-weight measurements themselves. All you need to do is provide some basic information, such as your age, height, and gender, and the program automatically customizes a program for you that burns the optimal number of calories for your bodyweight goals. Very cool feature and easy to use as well.

Other notable features: iPod Docking and Charging Station, 30 day money back guarantee, sometimes they offer free iPad minis and other cool extras.

Guru Test Drive

When we ordered this one for testing, the very next day the order shipped out along with the tracking information. The delivery man also notified us a couple hours before he arrived to drop it off, a well-appreciated customer service feature. As a person who struggles to put together any sort of furniture together, even I had no problem setting this machine up. However, if you are older, definitely consider paying the extra bit of money to have this assembled for you.

This is a relatively heavy machine, standing at 240 pounds. Yowza added 2 features that really showed this company’s attention to detail. First off, to balance the 60% incline, you have to make sure that the machine is still stable when you are standing at such a steep angle. Secondly, you have to ensure that the base of the machine itself is stable so it doesn’t get too top-heavy. Yowza combatted both of these problems by adding base levelers in the back, along with a stabilizer in the front. The front wheel lift system and carrier handle in the back facilitate the moving process, even though the machine is pretty heavy. This machine is heavier than both the Miami and the mid-range Captiva model.

Lengthwise, it is not a huge change from its previous models. The length of the machine only increased 3 inches when taking into account the longer stride. No other dimensions have been altered. Keep this in mind if your house is short on space.

My favorite comfort feature about this machine are the incredibly comfortable padded foot pedals. I’ve definitely worked out a couple of time barefoot because it’s just that comfortable. The machine is very quiet, and it hardly makes a peep aside from the occasional squeak from my shoes. This makes it perfect for those of you who are planning to use this for a residential lifestyle. You won’t be disturbing your neighbors when you get your great workout in.

Personally, I’m someone who has pretty bad knees after years of running and plyometrics have taken their toll. I’ve been using ellipticals for years in an effort to protect them. The marriage of the 12 different inclines along with the natural motion of the machine really helps to target my quads, hamstrings, and glutes without straining my knees. The burn I feel when I increase the incline almost simulates the feeling of working out on a stair-stepper rather than a smooth elliptical, but that just offers a different sort of muscle targeting. Even my older parents, who have artificial hips, would be able to use this without feeling discomfort.

The Intelligent Weight Management System is a great program that really helps maintain your ideal weight. There are 12 pre-set programs and 3 customizable programs on the Yowza Islamorada. This program takes out the guess work involved in planning workouts when you want to reach or maintain an ideal weight. Each workout is customized by comparing your weight on that day to your overall health goals. The machine then adjusts the duration and intensity accordingly so you can meet the optimal number of calories burned.

However, if you’re not feeling the automatic optimized workout, you can manually tailor the intensity or duration to match your lifestyle’s needs. This flexibility allows multiple members of the family to use the machine at the same time, and all of you can happily work out without interfering with each other’s fitness goals. This model also comes with a heart rate chest-strap monitor and wireless weight scale, like its sister model, the Miami.

The machine comes with a great best-in-class warranty, the same one that is offered with the Miami. It includes a lifetime frame and braking system, 5 years on parts and electronics, and 2 years in home labor.

Final Thoughts

If you can afford it, the Yowza Islamorada is worth every penny. Users seem to really like these elliptical trainers and the Treadmill Doctor, previously negative on the Yowza brand, awarded it a Best Buy Runner Up in recent years behind the TRUE M30 in the $2000-$2499 category.

The Islamorada will speed up your weight loss and fitness goals, as well as those of everyone else’s in your family. While it’s comfortable to use, don’t confuse that for a lack of intensity. You will definitely end up drenched in sweat by the end of your personalized workouts. This will not be a machine that ends up being an overpriced towel rack; the investment is definitely worth it for the years of health you gain.
