The New ProForm Smart Series Ellipticals With iFit Coach

ProForm Smart Series Ellipticals

If you’ve visited the ProForm website recently, you may have noticed there is a new SMART Series available, and wondered what it was all about. We took a closer look to find out more…

The ProForm SMART Series – New Ellipticals?

Delving a little deeper, we realized that these weren’t brand new ProForm elliptical models, but rather a select few ellipticals and treadmills that were now carrying the SMART badge. So the machines themselves have not been changed, rather they have been given a new designation.

So what does SMART mean exactly? It simply means that these particular machines now come with a one year iFit Coach membership included in the price. iFit Coach is a unique program found exclusively on ICON Fitness brands, the two most prominent of which are ProForm and NordicTrack.

iFit is an ever-evolving program, with a growing list of features and capabilities to help motivate you to reach your fitness goals. You have the ability to work out with personal trainers in destinations across the world, and with Google maps it’s as if you are actually training in those locations.

You can also choose in class training, featuring an instructor in a gym setting just like your local health club. Add to this an endless array of workouts, tracking and sharing capability, nutrition plans and tailored programs, and you can see just how extensive it is.

iFit Coach typically requires a yearly membership fee, but the new SMART ProForm ellipticals and treadmills include a year for free in the price. It’s their way of introducing you to iFit so you can see just how cool it is and then decide if you want to continue with the program. Most people decide it’s well worth the nominal yearly fee for all that you get.

Which ProForm ellipticals are now SMART?

As of this writing there are four SMART ellipticals and three SMART treadmills. The four ellipticals are the Endurance 920E, Pro 12.9, Pro 16.9 and the top Smart Strider model, the 895 CSE.

It looks like its the more advanced models in each series rather than the entry level ones. So iFit Coach is still optional on all of the base models, including the 520E, 720E, Pro 9.9, 495 CSE, 695 CSE and the Hybrid Trainers.

It’s interesting to note that many of the NordicTrack ellipticals also include a free year of iFit Coach currently, yet they do not carry the SMART designation. I wonder why they would change the name on the ProForm ellipticals but not the NordicTrack ones.

Should you buy one of these ellipticals?

ICON Fitness has been making a lot of efforts with iFit Coach, updating the program on a regular basis and adding new features and capabilities all the time. So it’s obvious that they are doing whatever they can to make this work, and want as many people as possible to sign up for a membership.

We’ve seen iFit evolve from an SD card option on just a select few models, to Bluetooth connectivity on some machines to a Wi-Fi connection built right into ellipticals with touch screen displays. It’s currently an option on all of the ProForm and NordicTrack elliptical trainers, and it has been a major feature of all of their television advertisements.

So iFit is definitely here to stay…the question is do you need it? The better question is do you want it? You can certainly work out on an elliptical trainer without it, and none of the other major brands, including Horizon, Sole, Life Fitness, Precor, etc. have anything that comes close to what iFit offers.

It comes down to whether you want it or not. If you’re someone who just likes to get on your elliptical, put on your headphones and listen to music, and get right off after a half hour, you might not want all that iFit has to offer.

However, if you need a little motivation, or like the idea of exercising anywhere in the world, or like to track and share your workouts, iFit Coach might be just the thing for you. After the free year on the SMART elliptical, it’s only a couple of hundred dollars a year, and you can work out one on one with personal trainers either in the gym setting or in an exotic location where the scenery unfolds in front of you as you move on the elliptical.

On top of the training you get nutrition and sleep recommendations, tracking capability to monitor your progress and other tools and tips to get you into the best possible shape.

So it really comes down to what you want out of your workouts. Do you want to go it alone or do you want someone pushing you to train harder…that’s what you need to ask yourself.

The bottom line on ProForm SMART ellipticals

The ProForm SMART ellipticals are the company’s way of introducing you to all that iFit Coach has to offer, giving you a free year membership to try out all of the features the program gives you. It’s a SMART idea 🙂 as some users are unaware of what iFit is all about, and they choose to skip the added iFit cost when making their purchase.

Now you can test it out yourself, and then make the decision as to whether or not to continue once the year is up. You just might find that iFit is exactly what you’ve been looking for to keep you motivated to reach your ultimate fitness goals.
