Expert Reviews

“The 1st runner up in the $1499 category, the Smooth 7.4, was last year’s best buy winner. Unfortunately, Smooth failed to upgrade the 7.4 from last year while others were innovating.” -Treadmill Doctor

“The Smooth CE 7.4 elliptical has been out for several years and proven to be a very low maintenance crosstrainer, which is evident by the lifetime brake system, 5-year parts and 2-year labor warranty. This elliptical trainer is one of the better buys at the $1,500-$2,000 price range.” – Fitness Equipment Source

“The smooth ce 7.4 has the same solid and sturdy feel as some of the elliptical trainers you are used to in your local gym. If your looking for professional results on a commercial grade elliptical trainer, than the smooth 7.4 elliptical trainer may be what your looking for. You won’t find better value than with the smooth 7.4 ce elliptical trainer. ” – Building Muscle 101

User Reviews

“I have had this machine for over a year now, I am 6’2″ and 208 Lbs and I and my family use it about 3 to 4 times a week, and it is still a solid, silent, great piece of equipment. I would definitely buy it again and would recommend it to anyone.” – T.Paolella, New Jersey

“Stability and movement wise, the equipment is solid. Smooth and fluid. But it’s the little things that really disappointed me. The computer is frustrating – simple things like age and weight, which is persisted between sessions, but if you hit stop twice it reset to the defaults. Scan mode for telemetry (heart, speed, distance, etc) resets to the static default after a pause. For the price, the computer should be much better than it is. I’ve had this for about a month now and machine is starting to squeak on occasion and the handlebars shake. I’m keeping the equipment, but it definitely did not live up to my expectations.” – Kirk, Vermont

“The CE 7.4 is very solidly made and in my opinion a much better deal than ellipticals from Precor or Life Fitness. I (6’6″ tall) enjoy it very much but I can see that small people might have a problem with it. The ride does feel very smooth indeed.” – Mike Mettke “Mike” (New York, NY)

“I have been using it for about 3 weeks now and I am very impressed. This trainer feels like the ellipticals I used at my gym. It is very quiet and has a real stable and solid feel.” -H. Giersberg, DE

Conclusion

There were plenty of mixed reviews on the Smooth CE 7.4, but for the most part many users were happy with their purchases. Many felt it was a great elliptical with quality features at a great price. Yet there were quite a few negative reviews from shorter users (those about 5’4”) saying the large footprint was too large and felt uncomfortable, while many taller users (those about 6 foot) stating they loved it. A few did report computer errors as well, stating it was not recalling their data and instead switching back to defaults, which could be bothersome to those wanting to record their numbers. Overall there were many positive reviews to make this elliptical a great buy, yet if you are on the shorter side you may want to test out an elliptical like this before making the plunge in purchasing.
